Social Impact

From 1913 onwards, Mr Tan Kah Kee started to raise money for education purposes in his hometown. This somehow kickstarted his career as a philanthrophist.

1906, he actively participated in Hokkien Clan Association to build a school named Tao Nan, and became the school's third president. It was a primary school then.
He became aware of how the people in Singapore had to go abroad to China to further their studies for High School. As such, he began initiating both Malaya and Singapore to donate money for a school.
He kick-started the donation by donating $30,000. Lots of people followed his example and went on to donate money. They received a total of $500,000 and this was enough to build a school, which was later named as 'Chinese High School', now known as Hwa Chong Institution. In 21st March 1919, it opened officially. This was the first chinese school in Asia-Pacific. He went on to donate money for schools such as Chong Fu and Nanyang High School.
His buisness went to a deep turmoil after a financial crisis. Although his buisness was crashing, he did not stop donating money for the schools. Instead, he sold all his manchines in his factory for the schools when CHS went into a crisis where there was a lack of students. This resulted in end of his buisness which was once so internationally recognisable.
His contributions helped Singaporeans to thrive, especially the chinese. Most of the chinese at that time worked as coolies and led a hard life. Upon founding schools, he enriched the education of the chinese and thus allowed them to be more eduacated. In this way, they would have more jobs available for them since they have higher qualifications.
Having a school also taught them of moral values and thus they were educated on the correct way of life. This is important as there was violence along the streets and need to be stopped.
I think this is a social impact as it improves the education of chinese who came to Singapore and help them socially to find jobs
